This Week’s Vegan Winners and Losers (41)

Find out who is keeping it moving, and who is stuck in a rut!

This week’s vegan winners and losers – week beginning 05/11/18

Going up…

Wicked Kitchen

Wicked Kitchen have come out with yet another great product. That is: an Italian style cold cuts sub! It’s a vegan meat and cheese combo complete with mayo and salad! I absolutely need to get my hands on this.

Hotel Chocolat

So, Hotel Chocolat already labels its dark chocolate products as being vegan-friendly, which is great. Well, now they have created a milk style bar labelled as vegan. It’s made with coconut milk! Have you tried it yet?

Starbucks are back at it again with a vegan sandwich for the winter! Looks small and very boring, and it’s probably expensive, but… it’s there! Well done.

Yo! Sushi

Yo! Sushi have absolutely blown me away with the new menu which features around 10 new vegan dishes! This is in addition to the many already existing vegan dishes on the menu. Many include vegan mayo! They have even added a vegan dessert which isn’t fruit or sorbet! How fab?! I can’t wait to go and stuff my little face.

M&S have released their Christmas sandwich and it’s actually faux turkey! Of course, we love vegetables, but every vegan Christmas sandwich on the market is either parsnips or butternut squash or whatever… it’s time to put faux turkey on the lunch menu! I will be going out of my way to try this one.

One Pound Meals

The other day my cousin brought Miguel Barclay and his Instagram/series “One Pound Meals” to my attention. I’ve never heard of this before – probably because he is not a vegan chef and his recipes aren’t vegan. However, he has made the effort to put together a vegan edition of his One Pound Meals cookbooks, which I think is absolutely fab. We often have the stereotype of being rich, so it’s awesome to see people making the lifestyle more accessible for everybody. Please head to his Instagram and show your support in the comments. I’m really looking forward to it! Thanks, Miguel!

Caffe Nero

You guessed it, folks, it’s another crimbo sarnie. Caffe Nero are serving butternut squash lols… chestnuts, lentils, and cranberries though – very nice!

Tesco / Sci-Mx

A “plant-based protein” advent calendar is on sale at Tesco this year! I’m equal parts confused and delighted.

Going down…

Dairy giant Arla have decided to try and mislead and confuse the consumer – something they accused plant-based milks of doing – by creating a dairy/oat milk combo and writing milk much smaller in a harder-to-notice colour on the label. Wow, huns. Me thinks someone is feeling the vegan squeeze… #desperate

I guess I have to include Waitrose-gate this week. For those who live under a rock, William Sitwell (now ex) editor of Waitrose magazine sent out a snarky email in response to a vegan writer suggesting more vegan recipes in the mag. He said:

“How about a series on killing vegans, one by one.  Ways to trap them? How to interrogate them properly? Expose their hypocrisy? Force-feed them meat? Make them eat steak and drink red wine?”

I really don’t even know what to make of it. He was clearly intoxicated, or something, to send out such an unprofessional and ill-humoured response to a professional email. I don’t think it’s the end of the world but it is certainly a bad reflection on Waitrose as a company, and it was pretty contemptuous to a well-intentioned writer making a business proposal. He was never dismissed, but left of his own accord… What are people’s thoughts? Messy.
